Epic Manufacturing Update
For the past few years at Epic Kayaks, we have been keenly aware of the global shift in international trade and commercial relations. Indeed, we have been at the coal face of this situation in some ways. We took a strategic decision in 2024 to start a small research and development plant in Cape Town, South Africa where we could build a new generation of surfskis with new layups and construction methodology and test them in the world-class proving grounds of the Miller’s Run, and beyond. Since early last year, as soon as we experienced the USA-China tariff war and the volatility that it created, with tariffs at times reaching 170%, we started building up this facility as a production base. Australia has already received their first container, and the USA and Europe are scheduled to receive the next shipments.
This restructuring, both necessary and challenging to have a sustainable business with quality products and designs at sustainable prices, is now substantially under way. China remains a manufacturing source for our products, while still dependent on future trade relationships and tariffs. We have therefore engaged with a highly reputable partner in China to help achieve an optimal outcome as we move through 2026.
The medium-term supply effects on our dealers and customers may include some lag times, but we have ensured that there is a solid supply of stock, well into this year, while we undergo these manufacturing changes.
And, of course, we look forward to giving you some exciting updates as we roll out our long-term strategic plan.
See you out on the water!
